COMMUNITY SUPPORT

COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Today, nearly half of the dollars SAHARA spends to care for the community still comes from the South Asian philanthropic community – private foundations, family trusts, and individuals with a strong sense of social responsibility.
Families or individuals who received help when they needed it most and now that they have become well-established are giving back in the same spirit.
It is a strength in the South Asian community and is key to the ongoing success in building the strong cultural presence in Southern California.
SAHARA honors our current supporting community (and their corporate networks) and recognizes the contributions of our founders and their supporters as well.

SAHARA was founded by social workers and physicians who saw a crucial need for help and chose to step in together, rather than turn away.
They gave of themselves and their own resources to make a real difference and once their friends, families, and faith communities started contributing to the cause, they squeezed every nickel twice, keeping ruthless track of every penny. Everything was designated for service.
The Founders’ philanthropic community partners were often working side by side to serve the needs of SAHARA’s clients. They were funders, board members, and service providers. It was a powerful team that will not be matched in today’s highly structured nonprofit models, yet we see the same shared responsibility and commitment to integrity and results in our SAHARA Team today. In fact, some of those partners still sustain the work.
