PROTECT YOURSELF ONLINE

If you are in an abusive relationship and feel like your online activities are being monitored, you need to access information online safely.

Abusers will often want to control every little thing about their victim.

If you are in an abusive relationship and are planning to leave, it’s important to learn how to be safe online also.

  • If your mobile phone, computer or tablet are all easily accessible to the abuser, you need to be careful on how to use it. Don’t use the devices for things that could create a fight or make the violence escalate.
  • In order to find support and help, try to use a public computer- at the library. For your safety plan, don’t use devices that your abuser has access to.
  • Change passwords and usernames to your devices or online accounts like social media, email addresses, phone bill, bank statements etc.
  • Create a new email address that they don’t know about. Try to make it random and anonymous instead of using your real name or your child’s name.
  • Another thing to remember is that if you feel like your abuser is online stalking you, it might cause violence or jeopardize your safety if you suddenly stop your online activities. So, try to look for safer devices to look up information on how to get help or to communicate with others who can support you.
  • If you email, text or are communicating with a domestic violence organization, remember to always delete the messages once they are sent or received.

If you are concerned about internet and browser safety, you have two options:
