Gender-based Violence is an act deeply rooted in gender inequality, and is a human rights violation. Gender-based violence is violence directed towards a person because of their gender. Most victims of this kind of violence are women, but sometimes men can be victims too.
Domestic Violence is a style of behavior in a relationship where one partner abuses the other to maintain power and control over the other. It can happen to couples who are married, living together or are dating.
Domestic violence does not discriminate against any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. Anyone can be a victim or the enforcer of domestic violence.
Domestic violence includes any behavior or actions that physically harm, create fear, prevent a partner from making their own choices and/or force them to act in ways they do not want. Domestic violence includes the use of physical and sexual violence, verbal threats and intimidation, emotional and mental torture and financial exploitation and deprivation. Many of these forms of domestic violence are usually occurring at any one time within the same relationship.
Sexual Violence is an all-inclusive term that refers to crimes like sexual assault, rape, and sexual abuse. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetimes. Nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 38 men have experienced completed or attempted rape. 1 in 3 female rape victims experience it for the first time between 11-17 years old and 1 in 8 reported that it occurred before age 10.
